It was a separate municipality from 1857 to 2002, first under the name Saint-Paul-L'Ermite and then under the name Le Gardeur starting in 1978. According to the 2016 census, the sector had a population of 21,413.
The sector hosts an annual festival, the Rendez-vous estival de Le Gardeur.
